Angurugu youth have long had an enormous amount of passion for "On Country" programs both in and out of school.
Council's Youth, Sport & Recreation Team in Angurugu has rebooted the "On Country" program commencing with a boys hunting trip that went off with a bang. The first hunt of 2017 was so successful that the team had adults asking staff "is it true? Do you have photos?".
Luckily our YSR team where there to document the groups amazing afternoon which culminated in our first youth evening dinner. Prepared and cooked by the young men, the spread offered freshly speared stingray, crab & fish - a feast to remember.
The group of young males involved proudly displayed a high level of cultural and local 'on country' knowledge that rewarded them well. It was the talk of the community for days after and raised a lot of excitement amongst the youth of Angurugu that 'YSR On Country' program was up & running again.
'On Country' gives young people an opportunity to express pride in their culture as well as get out of community and practice cultural knowledge - all while having FUN! Youth, Sport & Recreation Angurugu runs this program on a weekly basis and links in with the schools 'Learning On Country' program.
Council and youth can't wait to share more adventures with you!
